Monday Jul 20, 2020
Lancashire Cricket Academy Director to England Women’s Academy Head Coach: The finding of Jimmy Anderson; Talent identification; Developing self belief; Making critical decisions and how Andrew ‘Freddie' Flintoff got his nick name are all covered in this great conversation.
Stanny is a former Lancashire wicket-keeper and coach, and believes the experience and knowledge he gained in the development of the successful Academy at Emirates Old Trafford after becoming its founding director in 2002 is proving invaluable in his role with England women’s Academy.
Stanny it truly an exceptional and experienced developer of cricket talent. He said about his time at Lancashire
“It was a case of getting systems in place so we could identify talent and then find the best ways of allowing that talent to develop, to the point where the players were ready to contribute for Lancashire and hopefully then go on to play international cricket,”
Stanny has regularly been namechecked by players from Andrew Flintoff to Haseeb Hameed as a key figure in their development.
This is such an insightful and honest account of his journey and how he navigated the challenges and opportunities he faced both in cricket and life.

Paul shares his personal views on the current crop of England Bowlers and his experiences playing with the likes of Bob Willis, Brian Lara, Gladstone Small and Alan Donald. For any aspiring fast bowler or if you just have an interest in cricket then this is definitely worth a listen.
There is also great insight into the brilliance of the late Bob Woolmer and how his messaging as a coach was simple and consistent yet he would never say the same thing twice.
This is the third of five conversations. So, to hear more insights and views from Paul, please look out for future conversations over the coming months. I am confident they will be great!!

Are you interested in the ups and downs of being an aspiring professional footballer and what it is like being a lead coach and integral part of one of the most interesting and exciting clubs (and projects) in the football league – Salford City? If so, you are in the right place…
In 2017, Lewis joined Salford City Academy and his role was to bring the experience he gained at Burnley (a Premiership Academy) and work for the Class of 92 owners to develop a new Football Academy with Jamie Russell.
He openly shares his experiences as an aspiring professional footballer, the highs and lows and how he has become the coach and person he is today. This is a fantastic and ‘real honest’ insight for all parents, young players, and aspiring coaches.

Rachael Mackenzie - World Thai Boxing Champion and Neuro Physiotherapist
Monday Jun 15, 2020
Monday Jun 15, 2020
An amazing and rich conversation with world champion Thai Boxer Rachael Mackenzie. Eating disorders and anorexia, stereotypes around women, self-belief, the importance of mindset and performance behaviours and so much more is covered. There is truly a takeaway for everyone who is looking to become the best version of themselves and overcome some barriers and limiting belief.
Rachael is a World Thai-Boxing champion, neuro physiotherapist, sporting ambassador and mother of twins.
She started Thai-Boxing in 2000 whilst at University. In 2006, she topped the Women’s Thai-boxing world rankings in 2 weight categories (50kg and 52kg). Rachael has also taken 2 British titles – both by knockout – and a European title.
She later became the first European Woman to compete in traditional bare-knuckle Thai-Boxing in Thailand and the first woman to fight under Full Muay-Thai Rules in the UK. Throughout her career she has had to overcome prejudice from people who do not believe women should compete in contact sports.
Following a knee injury, Rachael made the switch from Thai-boxing to Boxing, taking silver at the National Championships in her first season.

I had the great pleasure of speaking with Nathan Wood who is currently playing his part in developing the next England cricketers and coaches.
He has shared his amazing, honest, and rounded view of being a professional player, then coach and now coach developer and parent himself. This is a priceless insight for all parents, coaches and developers of others and especially those grappling with high aspirations for themselves and or their family, or who are coaching their own children.
Nathan’s measured and very thoughtful approach and account of his Sport Story is a clear demonstration of the self-exploration he has done and continues to do in both his personal and professional life.
I am sure that the individuals on the Specialist and International Coaching programmes at the ECB will definitely value the breadth of his experiences, his depth of insight and understanding and his relaxed yet purposeful approach.
Take this opportunity to listen in so you can also gain some of this value!

Listen to a Double Olympian who started competing late in her career, has not always worked in sport and now holds several influential positions within sport. Sara shares a real insight into the brutal nature of her sport and even describes it as a game of ‘poker’. Knowing yourself, chronic fatigue, transitioning jobs, taking opportunities, positivity, transferable skills and team dynamics are just a few of the many areas we touched on.
Sara became Performance Director at England Netball five years ago & recently led the England Roses to a historic gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Other career junctures include a six year stint as Performance Director at Archery GB, three years at UK Sport as a Performance Advisor, two years as a Business Manager in the City & three years as a police officer working in Nottingham inner city. Presently she is Vice Chair of the UK Sport Performance Director Strategic Group (PDSG) & a Non Exec Director (NED) on the British Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) & SkateBoarding GB Boards. Her education includes a B.Sc in Sports Science & Social Science & a M.Sc in Sport Science (physiology bias).
Most notable sporting achievements include representing GBR at both triathlon & cycling – the latter involved two Olympic Games & two Commonwealth Games in road cycling, & multiple world championships (road & track). Sara was the first female to podium at World Cup level for GBR in 1998 & continues to challenge herself outside work (when time allows!) in endurance based sports ranging from half ironman’s to adventure races & individualised coaching.
Other interests include developing herself as a mentor/executive coach with an ambition longer term to formalise her passion for developing people’. She currently works with coaches within the Premier League, ECB & UK Sport World Class program

Rowena Birch - Olympian and European Judo Champion, now a financial advisor
Monday May 25, 2020
Monday May 25, 2020
Developing performance habits: Enjoying the journey; The richness of life through sport; Unpacking the puzzle of performance; Dealing with the unexpected death of her husband; Managing through change and bereavement; Transitioning out of sport; The importance of the team around you; Building back high performing transferable skills and so, so much more…
I particularly like the following quote Rowena shared which I think is really relevant in the changing and uncertain world we are in.
”Never compare your beginning to someone else’s middle or end”
Rowena represented Great Britain in the 1996 Olympics, and is a former European Judo Champion and National Coach. She then went to on to coaching the coaches, working with a wide variety of performance sports coaches.
The lessons learnt through high performance sport have served her well, providing her with a framework to lean on when life throws one of those curved balls. She also continues to enjoy practising a bit of judo in the local club.
On reaching her 50th year, Rowena chose a change of direction, retraining as a financial adviser. In this role she coaches individuals and businesses on their financial fitness. As part of their team, she brings financial planning expertise to the table, advising on financial resilience, efficiency and performance to align with and help achieve their wider goals.
Rowena’s motto is “Be serious with a Smile”, that is be serious about what you do, but never forget to have fun along the way.
